Portland’s Leach Botanical Garden

2015 – Present

The Leach Botanical Garden is a 16-acre garden located in outer southeast Portland, operated by the Portland Park Bureau. In conjunction with expansions and improvements within the park, Lancaster Engineering provided analysis and conceptual design guidance to address safety concerns along SE 122nd Avenue is the site vicinity. The existing street is narrow, without sidewalks or bike lanes and has significant horizontal and vertical curves with limited visibility. Since the existing main parking lot serving the site is on the west side of the roadway and the park itself is on the east side, pedestrians must regularly cross and travel along SE 122nd Avenue.

Lancaster’s work included identifying safe locations for future vehicular access to the upper portion of the site, examination of safety improvement needs surrounding the lower site where sight distances are restricted, and ensuring that city requirements could be met for a separated pedestrian path connecting the upper and lower garden areas along SE 122nd Avenue, since the existing roadway is cut into the side of a hill where it is impractical to add width for sidewalks or bike lanes. The conceptual designs for transportation facilities have been completed, and Lancaster Engineering continues to support the project team as we are currently moving forward with a comprehensive study of all potential transportation safety and operations needs associated with the park improvements.
